I had a similar situation. The vet told us that my cat was having a false pregnancy, but turns out that she was just fat. We didn't do anything. Vets are human and make mistakes. However, since they generally have superior knowledge they're the place to go when your dog is sick. (I would not recommend taking advice for breeding or feeding your dog from a vet, but that's beside the point.) There are also good vets and there are bad vets.

I had a dog who was misdiagnosed and died. I didn't do anything as the illness she had was fatal and it wouldn't have made any difference if I'd had the correct name for it earlier. The vet was great with her, both when he thought it was lupus and when we found out what was really wrong. Mia was gone. There was nothing to do.
