Why is my dog excessively licking and humping other dogs?

My 5 year old unneutered male Golden Retriever is displaying a relatively new behavior. He is excessively licking our friend's neutered male dog's private parts as well as the rest of his body. He also is constantly humping the dog and licks the ground where the dog just peed. We have to physically hold him down to keep him away from the other dog. Our Golden is just way too excited to try to calm down no matter what we have tried. Is this to do with the fact he is not neutered? Is it about dominance? Will neutering him stop the problem?

It will definitely help. For some reason, this dog has a scent that brings out the pup in your dog. You should also spray calming spray in the car before he goes to meet this dog- all natural and in the pet store for purchase. After your dog is fixed he should calm down in all areas of his life. You should also try a treat-based reward system and a new anti-pull leash, besides the neutering. ^_^

First of all, neutering is NOT a magic pill, especially in a five year old dog. It most likely will not change much of anything in a dog his age, except remove the risk of prostate issues or testicular tumors as he ages. Is he only acting this way with this one dog? If so, I would strongly suggest the owner of this dog get a urine sample checked for a UTI or bladder infection. When a dog has an infection there are often blood cells and bacteria present in their urine and to many dogs, it smells exactly like a female dog in heat. So, if this dog DOES have a urinary tract infection it is likely stimulating your dog and telling his inexperienced mind that he IS in heat.

Have him neutered to stop this behavior. Also train your dog and distract him every time he does that.

The licking and humping may seem related but that may not be ... the other answers provide some direction as to the licking behaviors. Humping behaviors are typically attempts at domination if a dog has been neutered. If not, both males and females, at some times, will hump for "other reasons" as well as domination. Does the Golden hump other dogs frequently? How does the Golden behave at leash free dog parks? My experience with Golden's suggests that they can, at times, get more than a little "wired" or "obsessed" about certain things ... usually a toy, but it can be a favored person or another pet.
